Kroch Srey Touch: My Year Abroad

June 16, 2026 — Across our programs at Harpswell is a shared commitment to personal growth and curiosity. Kroch Srey Touch ’25 reflects on how this belief shaped her past year as a US Scholar at Christian Brothers University (CBU) in Memphis, Tennessee.

I was drawn to becoming a US Scholar by a combination of curiosity, responsibility and hope. Coming from Cambodia, where access to education can still be limited, I have always seen education as a bridge. One that connects not only knowledge but also culture and opportunities. The idea of studying in the United States represented more than academic advancement: it symbolized a chance to challenge myself, to step outside of my comfort zone, and to bring back meaningful experiences that could benefit my community.

Harpswell had also deeply influenced me by emphasizing leadership and women’s empowerment and becoming a U.S. Scholar felt like a natural continuation of that journey.

My time at CBU has been filled with many meaningful experiences. What stands out the most is the sense of connection I found within a diverse community. One particular moment was engaging in classroom discussions where students from different backgrounds shared their perspectives openly. These conversations pushed me to think more critically and confidently express my own ideas. Beyond academics, simple moments became deeply meaningful because they made me feel seen and heard in a new environment.

Being a U.S. Scholar in Memphis has also taught me a lot about myself. I learned that I am more independent and capable than before. Living far from Cambodia challenged me to navigate an unfamiliar culture and manage responsibilities on my own. Adjusting to a different culture was not always easy, but it taught me resilience and adaptability.

At the same time, being at CBU helped me recognize the importance of my identity and values. I became more confident in sharing my Cambodian background and more aware of the unique perspective I bring into conversations. This experience showed me that growth often comes from discomfort, and that stepping in the unknown can lead to profound self-discovery.

I believe this experience, along with my foundation from Harpswell, will shape my future. Together, these experiences have prepared me not only to succeed professionally but also to lead with empathy and cultural awareness. Harpswell has already instilled in me a strong sense of purpose and service, and my time in the United States has broadened my vision of what is possible.

My time abroad has strengthened my commitment to leadership and community impact, particularly in supporting women and youth in Cambodia. I am inspired to use the knowledge and skills I have gained to contribute to initiatives that expand education access, promote sustainability, and empower others to pursue their goals. Being a US Scholar is not just an academic journey for me. It is a transformative experience that has changed how I see the world and my place within it.
