May 11, 2018: Harpswell students Bunhourng Tan and Sokanha Ly placed in the top 10 teams and received honorable mention for their “Eco-Plastic” project at the International Business Model Competition. 36 teams from around the world traveled to Brigham Young University in Utah to compete.Earlier this year, Bunhourng and Sokanha won second place at the McKinsey Mekong Business Challenge in Bhutan, the leading entrepreneurship competition for university students in the region, and second place at the Cambodian Business Model Competition in Phnom Penh.  They have also received funding from a US investor, toured plastic recycling facilities in China and met with Cambodia’s Senior Minister of Transportation.Bunhourng’s and Sokanha’s eco-friendly project aims to transform Cambodia’s plastic waste into durable asphalt concrete roads. Sokanha explained that “plastic waste is a curse to the environment, to health and to the economy . . . and people face a high risk driving on roads in Cambodia, which are often poorly constructed and damaged by high traffic. By establishing Eco-Plastic, we can use plastic waste to improve our roads, transforming landfill waste into a roadfill product.”Their win at the Mekong Business Challenge was featured in the Phnom Penh Post.
