Learning Resident Basye Peek: Reflections on Volunteering at Harpswell
Former LR Basye Peek reflects on her experience at Harpswell:"I had the honor of serving as the BT Dorm LR from August 2018 to January 2019. When I think about my time Harpswell, I often remember the familiar rhythms of a day: warm smiles on the way to the kitchen, the stacks of CD journals waiting to be read on the workroom bookshelf, the bustle of students settling into class in the library, and the sound of music playing in the courtyard as students washed their clothes. The most memorable and predictable element of any day as an LR, however, was amazement. I could always count on being blown away by the new talent a resident had to show me (from piano-playing to reciting K-Pop lyrics word-for-word), the tenacity of a student as she revised her application for a competitive program in Japan or Germany or the US, the thoughtfulness of a sister as she cared for a sick roommate, the discipline of a CD group as they scheduled a fourth or fifth meeting to practice their presentation, the spontaneity of any dance party, ever. The women that I knew and came to love at Harpswell inspire me with their commitment to educational empowerment in every sense of the term and it is because of them that I chose to continue pursuing a career in education as a Teach for America Corps Member in Nashville, TN." - Basye Peek
