Harpswell Students Explore Digital Literacy At 5-Day Bootcamp

Harpswell students are always looking for ways to expand their knowledge in various fields. Phorn Sophylian ‘21, Som Reaksmey ‘23, Tan Nguonnyny ‘23, and Phat Solorng ‘23 recently participated in the HER Project, an initiative funded by the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund and supported by the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The HER Project aims to teach young women digital literacy, project management, and digital campaigning.

At this five-day bootcamp, Harpswell students learned from professionals about all things digital, covering topics like social media ethics, misinformation, and internet privacy and safety. They designed and pitched digital campaign ideas. The students also toured the U.S. Embassy, where they met with representatives and learned about scholarships and programs in the U.S.

This bootcamp gave Harpswell students a unique opportunity to explore relevant topics that they can apply to their own lives and future careers. They were eager to take part in engaging lessons, meet other women, and speak with professionals. Here's what Harpswell students had to say about their experiences:

Phorn Sophylian

This program encouraged students to be brave and [enabled] students to understand lessons about digital campaigning and media literacy. I would like to thank all the HER project organizers who organized the program.

Reaksmey Som

After I got the email saying I was selected to join the HER Project bootcamp, I was so excited and I was really determined to join the event. I am more than grateful that I can learn more about digital literacy, especially digital campaigning which is related to my [major] at the university. And one more thing I want to mention is that getting to know other girls is wonderful and I really respect their perspectives and learning how they are dealing with their path.

Tan Nguonnyny

I’m grateful to have participated in the HER Project, made new friends, and learned many new lessons. Being part of the  five-day boot camp gave me unbelievable experiences and memories.

Phat Solorng

This five-day journey was the best bootcamp I have ever attended. The most exciting part was the visit to the US Embassy. The organizers [treated] us with great hospitality, while other participants gradually became our friends. It was quite miserable to say goodbye to the event and everyone who took part [in it].
