A Note from New Board Chair Shelly Kessler

March 2, 2023: I am honored to be writing to you as Harpswell's new Chair of the Board of Trustees! Four years ago, I had the opportunity to guide the Harpswell Board of Trustees in the development of a Strategic Plan, visiting the Cambodian dorms in the process. I was taken by the passion of Harpswell’s founder Alan Lightman, the commitment of Alison Pavia as Executive Director and, most importantly, the energy and enthusiasm of the young participants. I knew then that I wanted to stay involved with this exceptional organization. In 2020, I was honored to be asked to join the Board and now, as of January 2023, to serve as the new Board Chair.

Over the many years of my career, first in international development with CARE USA and UNICEF and later as a management consultant to nonprofits, I have been committed to creating equity for women and marginalized communities globally. Harpswell is uniquely situated to promote positive change for women in the ASEAN countries. Both on its staff and board, it has strived to elevate the voices of women from the region and to work collaboratively to create a program that is relevant, timely and respectful of regional cultures and traditions.

When both Alan and Alison announced their intention to step down from their leadership roles, there was a sharp intake of breath from the Harpswell community. Their work provided an extraordinary foundation for the future of Harpswell, and both agreed that Harpswell was in the right place for a leadership transition. Identifying a talented and experienced leader in Deborah Leaver as the next Executive Director was the first step in September 2022. In January 2023, I was honored to be voted in as Chair of the Board.

Both Deborah and I are thrilled to be part of the ongoing Harpswell story. We look forward to working with each of you in continuing the legacy of Harpswell’s founding leadership as we support the emergence of a new generation of women leaders.

With excitement for the future,
Shelly Kessler, Board Chair
